To my beautiful friend, the Sea

To my beautiful friend, the Sea,

Mary Oliver described you so well. She wrote:

“The sea can do craziness, it can do smooth, it can lie down like silk breathing, or toss havoc shoreward; it can give gifts or withhold all; it can rise, ebb, froth like an incoming frenzy of fountains, or it can sweet-talk entirely. As can I, too, and so, no doubt, can you, and you.”

Maybe like Mary Oliver, I am drawn to you because of the parallels and connection I see between us. We have so much in common. We both have an energy; a power to make or break, build and destroy. While others may share a different tale, my experience with you has been nothing but magical. You welcome me. Always.  Isn’t that the essence of a true friend? Your beauty awakens something inside of me; the ache and the cure, the sorrow and joy, death and life delivered together in one glance.

The Creator knew I needed you. You are part of His revelation and reflection. The ecstasy with you is accentuated by the possibility of being dashed into nothingness and forgotten. You are the epitome of vulnerability. You hold and cradle those who have lost life with you yet safely smooth the path with the tide and deposit treasures for the wanderer. You always welcome the wildness of the dreamer.  These are a few things I love about you. When we are apart I find myself with you…at least in spirit.

Until we meet again,
