The Question

I found it really interesting to see Jesus ask God a question in Mark 14:36. “And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt”. The reason it seems odd is that generally people ask questions when they don’t know the answer…or they ask a question to provoke thinking in someone else’s mind. Jesus asked a lot of questions. Most of the time, it’s apparent that he is provoking others thoughts. But this seems different. The proceeding verses he tells the disciples that his soul is sorrowful unto death. It seems we see a glimpse of his humanity like never before. Did it freak the disciples out to see him struggle emotionally? I’m not sure. But I would guess later on…after his death, burial and resurrection…when persecution and hardships were common, they may have found strength in remembering the garden where Jesus struggled. They knew he really did know their pain; they saw it first hand. And ultimately Jesus showed them that it’s ok to ask for a different outcome and yet still be fully surrendered to the Father’s plan. Isn’t that really comforting? Our prayers of faith, believing that God can, is a testament to His mercy and power, and the surrender in our hearts to His plan are a testament to His omniscience and sovereignty. Both seem vital…this prayer of faith…and surrender. God gave the answer to the world…that the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, was the only way.
